Hair Jigs

Hair jigs can be very effective jigs for walleye fishing, especially when walleye are aggressive.  You can use these jigs in a variety of colors, but the colors that resemble their natural forage tend to work best.

Popular Techniques

Float and Fly

A slip bobber and hair jig is a great way to target walleye.  Use this technique to imitate bait fish and you’ll have some success.

Drifting

When the wind starts to blow, you can drift a hair jig by itself or with some live bait attached.  Fish deeper water along a drop-off and you’ll have better success with this technique.

Slow Trolling

Slow trolling with hair jigs can be effective when fishing deeper water.  When the bite is finicky, add some live bait and you’ll catch a lot more walleye.

Best Rigs for Hair Jigs

Fish Them By Themselves

A hair jig can be used on its own, but you will need lighter line and an ultra light to medium action rod and reel.  This will make it easier for you to cast greater distances to help you catch more fish.

Drop Shot Rig

The drop shot rig is a great way to get the additional weight needed to get these hair jigs down to deeper water faster.  Tip with some live bait for even better success.

Slip Bobber

A slip bobber is a great way to use hair jigs for suspended walleye.  You can always tip with live bait to make this technique even better.
