Sault Ste. Marie is a city that lies on the northeastern end of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on the Canadian border and it is separated from its twin city of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, by the St. Marys River. The population was 14,144 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in the Upper Peninsula. This area has a diverse fishery with salmon, trout, walleye, northern pike, muskie, smallmouth bass and other species available too.
Salmon & Trout Fishing
This area offers some very good fishing for salmon and trout. Whether you are fishing in Lake Superior or the area rivers and streams, you can target chinook salmon, Atlantic salmon, pink salmon, steelhead, brown trout and brook trout. There are plenty of fishing charters available here or you can go out on your own.
Walleye Fishing
The walleye fishing is very good in this area. The St. Mary’s River offers very good fishing throughout the year, but the spring and fall are definitely prime time fishing for walleye. Munuscong Bay and Lake George are popular places to fish for walleye. Big fish up to and above 30 inches are possible in this area.
Muskie Fishing
Muskie fishing can also be good in the Sault Ste. Marie area. These fish roam the waters around here. From Lake Superior to the St. Mary’s River and the bays and lakes that are in between Lake Superior and Lake Huron, there’s a lot of good water to fish for muskie. Even though there are so many places to get out of the wind, it’s still a big water fishery, which means big fish are available. Muskie up to and above 30 pounds are caught here.
Northern Pike Fishing
St. Mary’s River and the bays and lakes that are in between Lake Superior and Lake Huron will definitely hold northern pike throughout the season. Some anglers target them and some very big fish can be caught here too.
Smallmouth Bass Fishing
Smallmouth bass are available in this area. Most anglers prefer to target them in the St. Mary’s River. Spring and fall are the best times to fish for them, but you can catch them through the summer as well. Some big fish are in this river system.
Perch Fishing
Perch roam the waters between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. The St. Mary’s River is a good place to look for perch. The fishing tends to be better in the spring and fall, but you can catch perch year-round here. Many of the walleye anglers will usually catch some perch while targeting walleye on the St. Mary’s River. Perch and walleye will use a lot of the same areas. If you just want to target perch, find the weeds and there’s a good chance you’ll find better numbers of perch.
