Welcome to our Wilderness Ontario Fishing Home Page

For this section, we are covering some of the wilderness areas that are in between some of the more popular featured destinations in this part of Ontario.  The featured destinations in this section will have less in terms of local businesses, stores, restaurants and even gas stations, so you want to make sure you’re heading into these parts of Ontario with a full tank of gasoline.

Highway 502 – Between Dryden and Rainy Lake

As anglers head up to Eagle Lake, Wabigoon Lake, Dinorwic Lake, Lac Seul, Red Lake and the Perrault Falls area, they will often take Highway 502 between Dryden, Ontario and Rainy Lake.  Most people will look at the waters that they drive by and wonder how the fishing is in these waters, but they usually just look and continue on towards their preferred fishing destination.  For some people, they will stop and fish some of these lakes for a day and others will actually plan a trip to this area.  Lodging is limited in this part of Ontario, however, there are some drive-to lodging options as well as some good boat-in options plus several fly-in fishing outposts.

Some of the popular lakes in this area are Rainy Lake, Esox Lake and Lower Manitou Lake.  There are so many smaller lakes in this area that are also home to some very good fishing for a variety of species such as smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskie, crappie, walleye and lake trout.

Highway 622 – Between Atikokan and Highway 17

Atikokan is a popular Ontario fishing destination and it is located at the southern part of Highway 622.  Once you get a little further away from Atikokan, you are going to get further away from civilization.  If you enjoy finding some lakes you can have all to yourself, there are plenty of places to fish along Highway 622 between Atikokan and Highway 17.  Anglers fish for walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass and lake trout in the area lakes.

Highway 17 – Between Ignace and Highway 11

This part of Ontario is home to several smaller towns that offer anglers some very good fishing for a variety of species.  Starting at Ignace, you will come to Martin, English River, Upsala, Savanne, Rath and Shabaqua Corners.  This section of the highway is home to several lodging accommodations that can help you experience some good fishing.  There is some big water here, but you are going to find mostly smaller lakes in this area.  Anglers fish for a variety of fish in the area lakes with most people targeting smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike and lake trout.
