Whitefish, Montana is a very popular vacation destination. It is probably known more as a winter vacation destination because of the skiing, but there is so much to do here during the summers as well. The town is tucked against Big Mountain and the peaks of Glacier National Park. There are plenty of accommodations from hotels, motels, resorts and even vacation home rentals. You will also find plenty of shops and restaurants also.
Primary Species of Fish
Cutthroat Trout, Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout, Northern Pike, Lake Trout
The primary species of fish in the rivers are cutthroat trout, rainbow trout, brown trout and bull trout. You may run into some brook trout and you can target grayling as well in the mountain lakes. The pike fishing can also be very good in Whitefish Lake and don’t forget about the lake trout in there as well. You have a lot of options for catching many different species of fish here.
Area Waters
Flathead River
The Flathead River is the home river for this area. It is a nice river to fish with some awesome scenery. You can catch the pure strain wild westslope cutthroat and bull trout here with some rainbow trout here as well. It’s a good river for numbers with some big fish too.
Whitefish Lake
Whitefish Lake is the home town lake for Whitefish, Montana. It is a very popular lake with some great scenery and some good fishing opportunities. There are fishing charters available for this lake and they usually target lake trout, bull trout, rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, whitefish and northern pike. It’s a good trout lake and the pike fishing is pretty good too if you want to target them.
Blackfoot River
The Blackfoot River is very scenic with its large rock formations, swift rapids and canyons. There are guides that fish this river and the fishing can be very good and the overall trip should be a nice adventure. You will find westslope cutthroat trout, bull trout, rainbow trout and cutbows are here too.
Clark Fork River
This is another river that guides fish in the area. This river fishes kind of like 2 different rivers. The upper stretch of this river is known for its excellent brown trout fishery. Rainbow and cutthroats can be caught here too. The lower Clark Fork River is known for its good rainbow trout and cutthrout trout fisheries. You will most likely run into some cutbows and an occasional brown trout too. Whether you choose to fish the upper reaches or the lower section, they both offer some very good fishing opportunities.
Missouri River
This is the river people go to if they are looking for a big fish. The Missouri River has so many fish swimming in it that you can catch good numbers of them with the average size a lot bigger than most of the other rivers and some big fish are considered common here. Rainbow trout and brown trout are both here.
Bitterroot River
This river is another good river with good numbers of fish and some big fish too. Anglers target rainbow trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout and you may also catch an occasional brook trout. The upper part of the Bitterroot River is known for its cutthroat trout fishery while the lower section is known more for its rainbow trout and usually bigger fish too.
Mountain Lakes
There are many mountain lakes in the area that anglers can fish as well. Expect to find some good fishing for rainbow trout, cutthroat trout and grayling too. For many anglers and guides in this area, they will usually choose to fish the mountain lakes in the spring time when the rivers are running high and dirty. You can fish these lakes from spring through fall with good success though.
