Cedar Lake is a very good walleye lake. With its two different sections, it gives anglers plenty of water to fish. For many anglers, Cedar Lake is a very good numbers lake with some big fish too.
Catch Lots of Walleye
Cedar Lake can be extremely productive if you time it right and if you know how to find the better spots. Earlier in the year, it is common for some anglers to report 50 to 100 fish days here. The fishing won’t always be super easy, but there are a lot of walleye on Cedar Lake.
Catch Big Walleye
Cedar Lake is known as a great lake for numbers of walleye, but there are plenty of big walleye in the lake too. For many anglers, they think of nearby Lac Seul if they are looking for trophy walleye, but if you put in your time on Cedar Lake, it’s possible to catch some big walleye. Fish in the upper 20 inch range and over 30 inches are possible. Just don’t expect to find as many big fish as you would on Lac Seul.
Fish the Deeper Shorelines
There are miles of shorelines here that offer excellent fishing for a variety of fish. The shorelines with deeper water are usually a lot better for walleye, especially in the summer and fall. The drop-offs with some rocks or weeds will hold walleye and during the morning and evening, you may catch walleye even shallower as they move up to find an easy meal.
Fish the Offshore Structure
Islands
There are several islands on Cedar Lake and you can definitely target the islands and have success catching walleye from summer through fall. The islands with deeper water close by will usually be the better spots for finding walleye. Fish these spots during the peak biting times early in the morning and in the evening for even better success.
Rock Humps
The offshore rock humps and reefs will hold a lot of walleye from summer through fall. Anglers fish this pattern all summer long with a lot of success. Walleye can be found in large numbers on some of these spots and you’ll also run into a lot of other fish such as smallmouth bass, northern pike, crappie, perch and muskie.
Fish the Points
There are plenty of points to fish, so if you want to hop from point to point, you can easily do so in search of some hungry walleye. The points with deeper water are usually more productive, especially in the summer and fall. Wind blown points can also be very producive.
Fish the Weeds
Cedar Lake used to have a lot more weeds in it than it does now, but there are still weeds in the lake and some walleye will relate to them. Early in the year, the new green weeds will hold plenty of walleye. As summer rolls around, the deeper weed edges will be key to finding walleye if you are fishing the weed pattern.
Best Baits for Walleye
Walleye eat a variety of different baits, however, when push comes to shove, it is much easier to catch them with live baits. Minnows, nightcrawlers and leeches are definitely the best live baits for walleye.
While most anglers will just use live baits, many anglers will also target walleye with lures as well. Crankbaits and soft plastics are the best lures for walleye, however, you can catch walleye with a variety of different lures.
