Wabaskang Lake is a very good walleye lake. With its stained waters, many anglers report that it is much easier to catch walleye here throughout the day than the other big lakes in this area. Good numbers of walleye are here with some big fish too.
Catch Lots of Walleye
Wabaskang Lake has become a consistent producer for good numbers of walleye year after year. While everyone won’t come here and catch hundreds of walleye, it is not uncommon to hear of boats having 50 fish days or even better here. You catch nearly as many trophy-sized walleye as nearby Lac Seul, but you have the opportunity to put up some good numbers here if you can figure out the pattern for when you are fishing here.
Fish the Deeper Shorelines
You can easily just find a rocky shoreline and start working the drop-off and expect to catch some walleye. There are miles of shorelines that provide quality fishing for walleye. The shoreline bite is typically better in the spring or early summer, but on some of the deeper shorelines, you can usually have good success fishing during the peak periods of the day. Early in the morning and late in the evening, there are a lot of fish that will move up out of deeper water to find an easy meal.
Fish the Offshore Structure
Islands
Once summer rolls around, the islands with deeper water nearby will usually provide quality walleye fishing and it will last through the fall. Wind blowing into a nice rocky shoreline can definitely help as well. Most of the islands are located in the southern end of the lake, but there are some islands farther north as well worth fishing.
Rock Humps
There are many rock humps that hold plenty of walleye throughout the year, especially during the summer and fall months. Fish some of these humps and you can expect to find plenty of walleye willing to eat one of your jigs.
Fish the Points
The points will hold a variety of fish from spring through fall. Walleye will move onto these points to find an easy meal. The better points will have deeper water nearby, so walleye can stay deeper until it is time to move shallower to feed. Fish the points during the early morning and evening and you’ll usually have a lot more success.
Fish the Weeds
Wabaskang Lake has a good amount of weed growth and the walleye will relate to the weeds. You can find walleye in the shallows relating to new weed growth in the spring and early summer. From mid-summer through fall, the deeper weed edges will be the better spots for winding walleye relating to the weeds. At times, the rock bite can be much better, so make sure to find plenty of spots to fish that have some rock and weeds, so you can make the adjustments depending on where the better bite is during your trip here.
Best Baits for Walleye
Walleye eat a variety of different baits, however, when push comes to shove, it is much easier to catch them with live baits. Minnows, nightcrawlers and leeches are definitely the best live baits for walleye.
While most anglers will just use live baits, many anglers will also target walleye with lures as well. Crankbaits and soft plastics are the best lures for walleye, however, you can catch walleye with a variety of different lures.
