Walleye

The walleye fishing can be pretty good in this area, however, for most anglers, the fishing will be tough.  This area does have a lot of walleye, but after the spawn, they spread out and are usually very deep.  With the deep, clear waters, they can be a challenge to catch for many anglers.

Fish Early in the Year

The spring is usually the best time of year for most anglers to fish for walleye here.  You will find a lot more walleye in shallower water and just a lot easier to find than later in the year.

Troll Deep Water

Once the summer pattern sets in, you will most likely have to troll and cover some water to consistently find and catch walleye.  Set out a spread of trolling rods and cover water in the 30 to 70 foot range near current breaks and you should run into some walleye.

Fish During Low Light Conditions

Due to the clear, deep water and plenty of fishing pressure here, the better walleye anglers will target these fish during their peak biting windows.  Fish early in the morning, late in the evening, on cloudy days or even at night to up your odds of catching some walleye.

Fish Lake Ontario

There are several fishing charters who target walleye in the spring, early summer and in the fall out on the lake.  You won’t always catch big numbers of them, but you will most likely run into some very big fish.  Walleye in the mid to upper 20 inch range are common with 30 inch fish possible too.

Best Baits for Walleye

Walleye eat a variety of different baits, however, when push comes to shove, it is much easier to catch them with live baits.  Minnowsnightcrawlers and leeches are definitely the best live baits for walleye.
