Rod Length
You can use a shorter rod, especially for jigging, however, a longer rod in the 7 to 8 foot range has its perks. They are better for making longer casts and for doing a figure 8 when needed.
Rod Strength
Go with a heavy rod or you will most likely miss a big fish at some point.
