Walleye

The walleye fishing is very good here on these lakes.  These lakes aren’t super deep, so you can find plenty of fish without having to go real deep here.  Target the points, bays and islands and you can catch plenty of fish.  Some of the offshore structures out on the main lakes will be better in the summer and fall, especially if you are looking for larger numbers of big fish.

Shallow Water Fishing

Wabigoon and Dinorwic Lakes are really shallow compared to many of the other popular drive to fishing lakes in Ontario.  Combine that with the murky water and you will find a lot of fish much shallower here compared to other lakes.

For many anglers, these lakes are a lot easier to catch walleye on than many of the other popular walleye lakes in Ontario.  Lighter jigs and drop shot weights work much better in the shallower water.

Murky Water Presentations

The water is murky here on Wabigoon and Dinorwic lakes and because of that, you can have a lot more success by using brighter lures or jigheads depending on if you are fishing with artificial lures or live bait.

Fish the Bays

Early in the year, you can find lots of walleye in the bays still.  These lakes have plenty of bays to fish.  Find the newer green weeds and the rocks and you’ll find some walleye early in the season.  From mid summer through fall, the bays will usually hold more pike than walleye.

Fish the Islands

There are plenty of islands to fish here and they will hold plenty of walleye in the summer and fall months.  The wind blown shorelines are great spots to search for walleye on these offshore structures.  If you can find some deeper water near these islands, you will usually have a better chance of finding bigger schools of walleye.

Fish the Points

There are a lot of points on these lakes and the walleye will move onto these spots all season long.  Wind blowing into a point will really help most of the time.  Rocks and some weeds will also help to attract more fish to these spots.  Just be careful if you plan on running point to point on these lakes because the water is very murky and there are a lot of rock hazards that you won’t be able to see without some a good map and good electronics.

Fish Rock Humps

There are so many rock humps to fish and it is a great pattern to fish during the summer and fall months.  You will need a good map and good electronics to find these spots due to the stained waters.

Fish the Shorelines

Because so many fish are caught shallow on these lakes, the shoreline bite can be pretty good all season long.  The spring and early summer will definitely be better for catching walleye along the shorelines, but don’t rule them out during the summer and fall months.

Fish the Weeds

There are plenty of weeds to fish on both lakes.  Due to the murky water, anglers may have a little harder time finding some of the weed lines, but good electronics will help.  Weeds won’t grow as deep here either since the sun can only penetrate so far down due to the water clarity.  Walleye will relate to the weed lines throughout the fishing season.

Best Baits for Walleye

Walleye eat a variety of different baits, however, when push comes to shove, it is much easier to catch them with live baits.  Minnowsnightcrawlers and leeches are definitely the best live baits for walleye.

While most anglers will just use live baits, many anglers will also target walleye with lures as well.  Crankbaits and soft plastics are the best lures for walleye, however, you can catch walleye with a variety of different lures.
