Marathon is just a short drive from Key West to the south and Key Largo to the north.  This 10-mile long island is located in the heart of the keys.  There are plenty of nice places to stay from inns to hotels to resorts. Swimming, snorkeling, diving, boating and fishing are very popular.  Fishing is excellent inshore, offshore or on the flats.  With over 200 types of fish, anglers have so many options here.

Marathon, FL Inshore Fishing


Marathon, Florida is known for its awesome offshore fishing, reef and wreck fishing and its famous for its tarpon fishing under the Seven Mile Bridge.  For those of you interest in fishing the bay, some flats or some backcountry fishing, there are some awesome waters to fish nearby around Big Pine Key and the Lower Keys or you can take a trip over to the Everglades National Park area.  This area has good fishing for a variety of fish such as tarpon, bonefish, permit, sea trout, redfish, cobia, jack crevalle, bluefish, sharks, snapper, grouper and more.

Marathon, FL Backcountry Fishing


You have lots of options here for this type of fishing.  Anglers will target redfish, sea trout, tarpon, snook, snapper and many other species of fish in the backcountry waters in the Marathon, Florida area.


Marathon, FL Bay Fishing


The bay provides anglers with some excellent fishing year-round.  While many anglers will go out in the bay to find those awesome backcountry areas with all the mangroves, there are plenty of fish just swimming around through the open waters of the bay as well.  In the bay, anglers will be targeting the grass flats, potholes nearby the grass flats, along the channels and anywhere they can find schooling birds feeding on schools of bait fish.  Having good electronics will also help anglers find good spots to fish.  Some of the popular fish to target in the bay are redfish, sea trout, barracuda, snook, tarpon, snapper, grouper and other species too.

If you are interested in doing some shore fishing in this area, there are some areas where you can fish from the bridges.  Anglers target snapper, grouper, sharks and many other fish from the bridges.  Another good option is to drive nearby to Bahia Honda State Park.
