Walleye

Lac Seul is famous for its excellent walleye fishing.  When you hear of people reporting 40 to 50 fish days here, the locals don’t even think anything of it.  Some boats with 2 to 3 anglers can easily catch over 100 walleye a day with live bait when the bite is going well on Lac Seul.  Every day isn’t going to be a 100 walleye day, but big numbers are possible here from spring through fall if you hit it right.

Catch a Big Walleye

Lac Seul is also known for its big walleye.  With the slot limit and strict fishing regulations, this lake has very good numbers of big walleye in it.  Fish in the 27 to 30 inch range are fairly common and even bigger walleye are possible.

Fishing Calendar

Spring Walleye Fishing

Month Avg. Air Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
March 31° / 8°
April 47° / 25°
May 62° / 39°

Spring is one of the best times for walleye fishing in Lac Seul.  The walleye spawn usually occurs in late April to early May, depending on water temperatures.  The walleye opener is usually the 3rd Saturday in May, so the weather will dictate what phase of the spawn you will be fishing on your trip.  On most years, you will be fishing for plenty of post-spawn fish, but colder springs can change that.

In the spring, look for walleye around shallow, rocky areas, gravel beds, and the mouths of rivers or streams that flow into Lac Seul.   They can often be found in large numbers as they leave these spawning areas and head back out to the main lake.  The east side of Lac Seul is famous for its early season walleye fishing.

Summer Walleye Fishing

Month Avg. Air Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
June 71° / 50°
July 76° / 55°
August 74° / 53°

Summer walleye fishing in Lac Seul can be very rewarding as the fish are actively feeding and can usually be found in good-sized schools.  Focus on underwater structures like submerged rocks, weed beds, and drop-offs.  During summer months, walleye tend to move deeper during the day with many fish out in 20 to 50 feet of water, but there are times when they can be found fairly shallow as they ambush baitfish around the rocky shorelines.  Many anglers will troll crankbaits and crawler harnesses to find a school of walleye, then they switch over to vertical jigging or drifting with live bait.

Fall Walleye Fishing

Month Avg. Air Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
September 62° / 44°
October 47° / 33°
November 30° / 17°

Fall fishing for walleye in Lac Seul can be outstanding as these fish are feeding heavily as they prepare for the winter.  September is a very good month for walleye fishing on Lac Seul with some good opportunities through October as well.  Many of the camps close down and few anglers will be out on Lac Seul in October, but there are still some very good days to fish during this month.  You may have to bounce around to see where the better bite is coming on any given day.  Some anglers report excellent fall fishing in water a little shallower than the summer, while many anglers report good fishing out over very deep water.  These fish are moving constantly and the cooler water temperatures allow them to sneak into the shallows to follow baitfish whenever they feel the need to go chase them shallow.

Winter Walleye Fishing

Month Avg. Air Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
December 15° / -2°
January 10° / -10°
February 17° / -5°

Lac Seul is pretty remote, however, there are some businesses still catering to anglers through the winter which makes it a little easier to plan a trip here.  The lake is huge and the fishing can still be great for walleye and pike as long as you have the equipment to handle these colder temperatures.

Hot Spots

Look for walleye around submerged structures, rock piles, and weed beds.  They can often be found near drop-offs and points.  In the spring, you can find walleye a lot shallower, but in the summer and fall, you will often find walleye holding off some of the areas that drop into water that is 30 to 40 feet deep and deeper.

Bays

There are many bays throughout Lac Seul.  Earlier in the year, you will have much better success by fishing in the bays.  However, some bays here are so big that they will fish more like smaller lakes.  Don’t rule the big bays out during the summer and fall because there will be plenty of fish in those bays.  Just think of breaking these bays down the same way you would break down a smaller lake.  Find the weeds, rocks, drop-offs, etc.

The smaller bays usually are better to fish in the spring and early summer.  Some of them have plenty of depth though to hold walleye in the summer and fall too.

Current Areas

There are many areas on Lac Seul that have some current.  The current areas may be hit or miss depending on where you are fishing, but they are worth checking out.  Spring and fall are typically your best times to fish the current areas.  Summer can still be good though, so be open minded to these spots.

Islands

There are so many islands to fish on the lake and many anglers will just go island hopping to find fish.  Every island can be quite different though and some islands can be dangerous with some of the submerged rocks being so close to the surface.  Wind blown shorelines on islands with a nice drop-off will be some of the better places to fish in summer and fall.  Walleye like these spots where water drops down 30 feet or more fairly close to the island.

Points

The points with deeper drop-offs are almost always better than the shallower ones, except early in the year.  Find the points with some nice drop-offs, preferably with water as deep as 30 feet or more close by.

Reefs

There are a lot of rocks on Lac Seul.  Many anglers are very cautious on this lake to avoid damaging their boats.  Make sure you have a good map and e careful when searching for these spots.  Fish the drop-offs around these reefs and you’ll catch some walleye.

Rocky Shorelines

You will find walleye along the rocky shorelines in these bays from spring through fall.  You may be able to catch walleye in less than 10 feet of water early in the year, but the deeper drop-offs will be better in the summer and fall.

Sand

Lac Seul has a lot of sand in it.  This is a pretty unique feature that you don’t find on many other popular Canadian lakes.  Sand may not be the best spot, but walleye do relate to this sand structure.  The summer and early fall tend to be better times to fish the sand, but don’t rule out these spots in the spring.  The nicest thing about the sandy points and islands is that you won’t get any snags while fishing on top of the sand.

Wind Blown Structure

Lac Seul is a big lake and the wind change things from day to day.  Wind blown points and islands are great places to fish.  The wind can kick up the lake pretty good though, so at times, you’re going to want to get out of the wind because the waves will be too big to fish safely.

Best Walleye Rigs

When targeting walleye, there are many different rigs that you can use to catch them.  While most anglers will keep it super simple and just use a simple jighead, many anglers will use a variety of rigs such as spinner rigs, 3 way rigs, bottom bouncers, drop shot rigs and many others.
