Lake Trout can be found in the colder, deeper lakes in the area, so you are going to have to get off the Winnipeg River system if you want to catch some lake trout. The better fishing is usually in the spring or late fall because anglers can target them in the shallows as they feed on a variety of bait fish. The shallows will be cool enough during these times of the year and anglers can catch them the same way that they fish for bass or pike. Casting crankbaits and jerkbaits can be very effective. Once the waters warm up, lake trout are going to go deep, so break out the trolling gear and jigs.
