Whiting are a smaller, slender fish that is usually targeted on the beaches. They can often be found in very shallow water just inside or outside of where the waves are crashing on the beach. Most fish are under a pound, but catching them in the 1 to 2 pound range is possible on many beaches.
Whiting Fishing in the Orange Beach / Gulf Shores, AL Area
Whiting are popular along the beaches. In the spring, warmer weather brings lots of whiting into the surf along the beaches. In the summer, whiting are still here in good numbers, however, you may have to get out to the beach early in the a.m. or later in the evening to avoid the people on the beach during tourist season. Whiting are one of the most consistent fish you can catch in the surf here.
Whiting Fishing Tips
Use smaller baits if you want to consistently hook a whiting. Live and cut baits work great with shrimp being the favorite bait for most anglers. Make sure to use smaller hooks, but you don’t want to go too light with your rod and reel. In the surf, you will need some heavier line and a good-sized rod and reel still since you will deal with the crashing waves, current and potentially some bigger fish that may take your baits as well.
