Whiting are a smaller, slender fish that is usually targeted on the beaches. They can often be found in very shallow water just inside or outside of where the waves are crashing on the beach. Most fish are under a pound, but catching them in the 1 to 2 pound range is possible on many beaches.
Whiting Fishing in the Myrtle Beach, SC Area
Whiting are one of the most popular fish targeted from the surf. The Atlantic ocean will hold tons of whiting in the surf from spring through fall. People enjoy fishing for them here, however, during finding a spot to fish on the beach can be more challenging during the summer tourist season. Fish early in the a.m. and later in the evening if you want to find some beach to yourself while here during the summer.
Whiting Fishing Tips
Use smaller baits if you want to consistently hook a whiting. Live and cut baits work great with shrimp being the favorite bait for most anglers. Make sure to use smaller hooks, but you don’t want to go too light with your rod and reel. In the surf, you will need some heavier line and a good-sized rod and reel still since you will deal with the crashing waves, current and potentially some bigger fish that may take your baits as well.
