Whiting are a smaller, slender fish that is usually targeted on the beaches. They can often be found in very shallow water just inside or outside of where the waves are crashing on the beach. Most fish are under a pound, but catching them in the 1 to 2 pound range is possible on many beaches.
Whiting Fishing in the Daytona Beach Area
Whiting will be common fish to target in the surf year round, however, the fishing is usually better in the spring and fall. When pompano start running in the spring, lots of anglers come out to the beaches to get into the action. As a result, you will also see a bunch of good fishing reports for whiting as well. Most anglers don’t specifically target whiting year round, but they are in the surf if you want to catch them. In the winter when the migratory species are not around, the whiting becomes a reliable fish for some action if you want to fish the surf. There are miles of beaches in the Daytona Beach area, so anglers have lots of water to fish for whiting. This area does get crowded though, so when there are lots of people on the beach, early mornings and evenings during the tidal change will be your best chance to find an area for yourself to catch some whiting.
Whiting Fishing Tips
Use smaller baits if you want to consistently hook a whiting. Live and cut baits work great with shrimp being the favorite bait for most anglers. Make sure to use smaller hooks, but you don’t want to go too light with your rod and reel. In the surf, you will need some heavier line and a good-sized rod and reel still since you will deal with the crashing waves, current and potentially some bigger fish that may take your baits as well.
