The afternoon can offer some incredible fishing for crappie during the early spring when water temperatures are still cool. A warm afternoon can raise water temperatures several degrees, which will often lead to better fishing. Once the spawn is over, fishing in the afternoon can be tough. Crappie are found in deeper water during most of the year and these fish will often be found even deeper during the afternoon. Bright and sunny days will usually make fishing tough during the afternoon. If you can find some schools of crappie in deeper water, you can still catch plenty of crappie during the afternoon; just don’t expect it to be easy. You may need to slow down and fish with live minnows when you do get on top of a school of crappie. Some of the better areas to fish are deep water brush piles, steep drop-offs, deep weed lines and in deep water just off of points.
