Flats

Shallow Water Flats

The shallow water flats are usually very productive early in the spring.  Huge pike can be found in just 2 to 3 feet of water, but you will usually do better throughout the spring if you have large flats in 4 to 6 feet of water.

Deeper Water Flats

On many good walleye lakes, anglers target walleye in the softer mud bottoms as bugs hatch and move towards the surface.  The bug hatches usually attract a lot of walleye and perch in the summer time and lots of quality pike can be found on these flats too.  It won’t be weeds or rock that draws pike to these areas, so look for bait on your fish finder and cover water until you find some active fish.
