Snook are found in the waters of Florida and in some other areas along the Gulf Coast. This fish is one of the most popular inshore fish. Since they can be found around docks and mangroves along the shorelines, snook are kind of like the largemouth bass for saltwater anglers.
Snook Fishing in the Tampa Bay Area
Snook prefer warmer water temperatures, so the Tampa Bay area isn’t a great snook fishery year round, however, there will be some snook to catch here year round. As waters are warmer from late spring through fall, anglers will see a lot more snook in the Tampa Bay waters and more importantly, a lot more active snook that are willing to eat. During the winter months, it is a lot harder to get the snook that are still here to bite a moving lure.
Snook Fishing Tips
Most anglers prefer to use lures for snook, but live baits such as jumbo shrimp and pilchards are some of the best baits to use. At times, snook can be super tough to catch on lures, but a lively shrimp or pilchard will usually still get plenty of bites even when they are picky. If you fish for bass in freshwater, the type of tackle will be similar to largemouth bass fishing except you may have to upsize the rod, reel and line a bit.
