Use Smaller Lures If You’re Looking for Action
The easiest way to a lot of smallmouth bass is to downsize your lures. These fish have smaller mouths, so make it easier for them to eat and you’ll get more bites. Use baits in the 3 to 4 inch range and you’ll have a much better chance to catch a lot of bass. The average size will be smaller, but you’ll have a lot of fun catching bass.
Live Baits are Tough to Beat
Using live bait is one of the most effective ways to catch smallmouth bass. Nightcrawlers, leeches & minnows will all work to catch a lot of bass.

Fish the Rocks
You will often find smaller bass chasing smaller minnows and crayfish over rocky bottoms. Many of these bass will just cruise water in 4 to 12 feet of water as they search for food.
Fish for Schooling Bass in Deeper Water
In the summer and fall months, smallmouth bass will often school up in deeper water. This isn’t just for big bass either. Some of these smaller bass will school up in huge numbers. Find them and you’ll have a lot of fun. You may be fishing 20 to 30 feet of water.
