Whiting are a smaller, slender fish that is usually targeted on the beaches. They can often be found in very shallow water just inside or outside of where the waves are crashing on the beach. Most fish are under a pound, but catching them in the 1 to 2 pound range is possible on many beaches.
Whiting Fishing in the Panama City Beach, Florida Area
Whiting are common along the beaches and some anglers do catch them in the bay as well as around the Panama City Beach pass. It is a common fish to find in the surf from spring through fall. In the spring, the whiting and pompano start showing up in better numbers and you will start seeing good numbers of people out there targeting them in the surf.
Whiting Fishing Tips
Use smaller baits if you want to consistently hook a whiting. Live and cut baits work great with shrimp being the favorite bait for most anglers. Make sure to use smaller hooks, but you don’t want to go too light with your rod and reel. In the surf, you will need some heavier line and a good-sized rod and reel still since you will deal with the crashing waves, current and potentially some bigger fish that may take your baits as well.
