Triggerfish are found in the same type of habitat as red snapper. They feed on crabs, shrimp, sand dollars, sea urchins and mollusks. Anglers usually catch them on squid or cut bait, but triggerfish are also a popular fish for spearfishing. These fish usually exceed depths of 80 feet or more.
Triggerfish Fishing in the Panama City Beach, Florida Area
In the Florida Panhandle between Destin and Pensacola, anglers have access to very deep water. Within 10 to 30 miles from shore, anglers can be fishing from 100 to 600 feet of water or even deeper in some spots. While the 100 Fanthom line may be closest to Destin in this region, you can get out to some very deep water in 20 to 25 miles from Panama City Beach. There are plenty of offshore reefs and wrecks on the way out to the 100 Fanthom line that will hold plenty of triggerfish and once you get out to the real deep water, triggerfish can be found around all types of awesome bottom structure. Many boats will target them, however, they are usually caught while targeting grouper and snapper on the bottom.
Triggerfish Fishing Tips
Triggerfish are notorious bait stealers and often frustrate anglers that are fishing for snapper and grouper. Triggerfish have a hard, bony mouth, so you need to make sure you’re using a small, but very strong, sharp hook.
