Northern Indiana is home to some very good fishing on Lake Michigan and on the St. Joseph River.  This part of Lake Michigan provides anglers good fishing for salmon, trout, smallmouth bass and perch.  The shallower waters warm up quicker on Lake Michigan, so anglers will see better fishing start down here in the spring.  The coho fishing picks up in the spring and then everything else follows.  The St. Joseph River is known for its annual spawning runs of steelhead and salmon.  Kosciusko County is also a popular area for fishing and boating with many different lakes.  Take a look below to learn more about our featured fishing destinations in Northern Indiana.


Kosciusko County


Kosciusko County is home to some of the more popular lakes to fish in Indiana.  The lake communities in this county provide people with plenty of outdoor recreation in many different lakes.  Whether you want to go boating, fishing or just relax and enjoy the sights, you have plenty of options in this area.  Anglers enjoy fishing many different lakes for a variety of fish species such as largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, muskie, walleye, perch, sunfish and more.



Southern Lake Michigan


The Indiana part of Lake Michigan has some outstanding fishing available.  Whether you want to target, salmon, trout, smallmouth bass or perch, you can target good numbers and trophy fish of all species throughout the spring through fall fishing season here.



Hammond, Indiana


Hammond is a city in Lake County, Indiana.  The city is located along Lake Michigan and it is part of the Chicago metropolitan area.  It is the only city in Indiana to border Chicago.  Anglers target salmon and trout mostly in this part of the lake, but you may also catch smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, perch, northern pike and more.



Michigan City, Indiana


Michigan City is on the south shore of Lake Michigan in Indiana.  There is plenty here to keep you busy with the Old Lighthouse Museum, Washington Park Zoo and Washington Park, which is home to a beach.  Combine that with the beautiful waters of Lake Michigan and this is a great destination for getting on the water in northern Indiana.  Anglers target salmon and trout mostly in this part of the lake, but you may also catch smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, perch, northern pike and more.



Portage, Indiana


Portage is a city in Portage County, Indiana.  It is on the border with Lake County.  The population is right around 38,000 people.  It is the largest city in Porter County and the 3rd largest in Northwest Indiana.  Anglers target salmon and trout mostly in this part of the lake, but you may also catch smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, perch, northern pike and more.



St. Joseph River


The St. Joseph River is a popular river to fish in northern Indiana and southern Michigan.  In the Indiana portion of this river, anglers do well from a boat and from the bank.  There are plenty of places available for shore anglers to access in Indiana, which gives anglers the opportunity to pursue big smallmouth bass, salmon and steelhead without even using a boat.  For the boaters, there are plenty of launches to help get you on the water quickly.  The salmon run is very popular on this river in the fall.  Steelhead are available in the summer as well as the late fall through winter.  Smallmouth bass fishing is best from May through September.



Tippecanoe River


The Tippecanoe River is a long river that cover more than 220 miles in northern Indiana.  It flows from Big Lake in Noble County to the Wabash River near Battle Ground, Indiana, which is about 12 miles northeast of Lafayette, Indiana.  This river is considered a river of lakes, as it is fed by 88 natural lakes that spans over 14 different counties.  There are also a large number of creeks that flow into the Tippecanoe River.

Anglers have a lot of options for fishing the river.  There are many species of fish to target.  Most anglers pursue smallmouth bass and northern pike, but there are also rock bass, walleye, sauger and many others as well.
