Sheepshead are a popular inshore species known for their black and white stripes and impressive bait-stealing skills. Found around structure, these fish feed on crustaceans and are best targeted with shrimp or fiddler crabs. They’re great table fare and are often caught in good numbers during late winter and spring.


Where to Catch Sheepshead


In the Destin area, look for sheepshead near:

Jetties, bridges, piers, and dock pilings

Oyster bars and rock piles inside the bays

Artificial reefs in nearshore waters

Drop bait close to structure and use sensitive tackle to feel light bites.


Best Time to Fish for Sheepshead

Spring Very active during late winter and early spring spawn
Summer Slows but still possible near deep structure
Fall Improves as fish migrate back inshore
