Black sea bass are bottom-dwelling reef fish found offshore and sometimes nearshore in the Gulf waters off Destin. These smaller but tasty fish are often caught alongside snapper and grouper on reefs and artificial structures. They’re aggressive feeders and readily take cut bait or jigs fished near the bottom.

You can find black sea bass:

On offshore reefs and ledges

Around artificial reefs and wrecks

In 40 to 100+ feet of water

Often mixed with snapper and triggerfish

Lures: Metal jigs, small bucktails, and vertical jigs

Bait: Squid strips, cut shrimp, and small baitfish

Leaders: 20–30 lb fluorocarbon
