Presque Isle Chain of Lakes

The Presque Isle Chain of Lakes in Vilas County, Wisconsin is a peaceful Northwoods gem made up of three connected lakes: Presque Isle, Van Vliet, and Averill. This compact chain delivers solid fishing for muskie, northern pike, smallmouth bass, walleye, and panfish, all amid clear water and scenic forested shores.

Fishing here can be tricky during the daytime—especially in Presque Isle’s ultra-clear depths—so anglers report the best bites come just after dark into evening, when walleye and trophy smallmouth become active around reefs and rocky structure. Smallmouth tend to hold deeper in the summer and fall, and walleyes follow suit on reefs once the sun drops. Focus on slip bobbers, jigs, and crankbaits near structure in 20 to 40 feet of water for your best chance at success.

Each lake in the Presque Isle Chain offers something unique—from clear, deep structure fishing on Presque Isle Lake to easy panfish action on shallow Averill. Whether you’re chasing big smallmouth after sunset or casting weedlines for pike, this quiet chain has you covered.

Averill Lake

Averill Lake is a 68-acre lake with a maximum depth of 5 feet. Averill Lake (map) is shallow and weedy, producing panfish all summer, with occasional pike, bass, walleye, and small muskie in spring and fall.

Presque Isle Lake

Presque Isle Lake (map) is the largest in the chain at 1,165 acres and 103 feet deep. Known for its trophy smallmouth bass and big muskie, this lake fishes best at night due to its exceptional water clarity. Focus on rocky reefs, deep weed edges, and shoreline breaks for the best shot at smallmouth and walleye.

Van Vliet Lake

At 230 acres and 20 feet deep, Van Vliet Lake (map) offers good action for walleye, panfish, and pike. It’s a solid option for daytime anglers, with plenty of fishable structure, weedy shorelines, and moderate depth.
