Curly Tail Worms

Curly Tail Worms are some of the most common soft plastics that are used for smallmouth bass. For smallmouth bass, most anglers have much more success with the smaller curly tail worms in the 4 to 5 inch range. You can still catch plenty of smallmouth bass with the larger worms in the 6 to 7 inch range, but the smaller worms usually work better for most situations. Some of the most common rigs are the Texas rig, Florida rig, Carolina rig, shaky head jig, a weightless rig, a split shot rig, a drop shot rig, scrounger jighead or even a swimbait hook. A slow stop and go retrieve works best with curly tail worms, but you can also have a lot of success with a slow and steady swimming retrieve.

Best Rigs for Curly Tail Worms

With a lot of the finesse-sized curly tail worms, a simple jighead will do the trick. Smallmouth bass are often around rocks and you aren’t going to avoid the hangups by fishing with a weedless style rig.  A regular jighead with the hook exposed will actually help you hook more fish too once they bite.

Drop Shot Rig

The drop shot rig works well with curly tail worms.  Make sure you use a heavy enough weight to help give the worm more action.

Using an underspin and curly tail worm is a great way to target bass by casting it out and swimming it in with a steady retrieve.  It is a very effective way to target smallies.

Best Finesse Worm Fishing Techniques for Smallmouth Bass

Hop Them Along

Curly tail worms look great when hopped along the bottom and smallmouth bass love to grab them off the bottom.  Work them along the bottom with your favorite rig and you will catch some fish.

Swim Them

The smaller curly tail worms look great when you swim them.  Rig the smaller, finesse style curly tail worms on a regular jighead and just wind them in with a steady retrieve to catch smallmouth bass.
