Cook County, Minnesota is home to some of the most scenic waters in all of Minnesota. The Gunflint Trail Scenic Byway is a 57-mile National Scenic Byway that takes you up over the ridgeline and through the woods as it provides access to the an outdoorsman paradise. Many of these lakes are located within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, which is mostly paddle only. There are plenty of lakes that also allow you to bring your fishing boat with an outboard motor, so you get a little bit of everything here. There is some excellent fishing here for a variety of fish to go along with miles of hiking and cross country skiing trails. You may also see a variety of animals as there are a variety of birds plus deer, moose, wolves and bears.
Primary Species of Fish
Walleye, Smallmouth Bass, Lake Trout & Northern Pike
Most of the area lakes will offer good fishing for something. They all don’t offer good fishing for walleye, smallmouth bass, lake trout and northern pike, but you can usually find good fishing for at least one or two different species of fish in many of the lakes. There are so many lakes here and many of them will offer very good fishing for smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike or lake trout.
Secondary Species of Fish
Panfish are secondary here on most of the lakes. On many of the lakes, the panfish fishing is pretty bad, but there are some lakes that offer some good fishing for bluegill, rock bass or perch.
