Fishing Cook County, MN in the Spring

Month Avg. Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
March 35° / 14°
April 48° / 28°
May 62° / 41°

Being so close to Lake Superior, this area takes a while to warm up.  By the time the walleye opener arrives, the water temperatures are still very cool on the area lakes.  If you want to target lake trout, walleye and northern pike, you can do very well working the shorelines on many of the lakes during the first couple weeks after the opener.  By the end of May, the smallmouth bass fishing picks up as water temperatures warm up.

Fishing Cook County, MN in the Summer

Month Avg. Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
June 71° / 52°
July 75° / 56°
August 74° / 55°

In June,  you can still find plenty of walleye, pike and smallmouth bass fairly shallow.  The first couple weeks of June usually provide some excellent fishing for smallmouth bass along the shorelines on many of the lakes.  Once July arrives, the summer patterns set in and you will have to go deeper if you’re looking for lake trout, walleye and better quality northern pike.  Because it doesn’t get super hot here in the summer, you can usually find some smallmouth bass along the shorelines on many of the lakes all summer long.

Fishing Cook County, MN in the Fall

Month Avg. Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
September 66° / 48°
October 52° / 34°
November 37° / 22°

The fall provides some excellent fishing as well.  It gets cold here pretty quick, so plan your trip accordingly.  The entire month of September offers good fishing for every major species of fish here.  As water temperatures drop in October, anglers can find some lake trout moving back into the shallows again as well.

Fishing Cook County, MN in the Winter (Ice Fishing)

Month Avg. Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
December 26° / 8°
January 21° / 1°
February 25° / 3°

There are a lot of good lakes to ice fish in the winter, however, with the lack of panfish on many of the lakes, some of the lakes will get a lot less angling pressure.  Lake trout, northern pike, bluegill, perch and whitefish are caught through the ice here in the winter.
