The spring brings warmer waters and more fish into this area. Anglers catch plenty of redfish, sheepshead, sea trout, flounder, whiting and black drum, but they also see other fish migrating into this area. Fishing near the Venice Inlet, anglers will start to see bluefish, tarpon, cobia, pompano, jacks, sharks and more as waters warm up in the spring.

In the summer, it gets hot here. The fishing is still very good though for a variety of fish. Inshore, expect to see good numbers of snook to go along with redfish, sea trout, flounder and black drum. Tarpon and snook are the big draw here in the middle of the summer. With multiple rivers feeding one inlet to the Gulf, the Snook Alley is home to some amazing summertime fishing for snook and tarpon. This area is famous for its night snook fishing due to the enormous amounts of snook here combined with hot weather and tons of dock lights that are lit up at night. The snook can be found in large numbers around some of these lighted docks at night. The weather is more comfortable at night and the fishing can be excellent at times. Anglers also catch bluefish, jacks, sharks, pompano and several other species of fish. Offshore, charters will be heading out of Venice Inlet to bottom fish the reefs and wrecks, run the beaches or troll very far offshore for pelagic species.

As the water temperatures cool in the fall, the bite stays strong in this area for so many different species of fish. You can catch many of the migratory species in higher numbers as they move back down along the Florida coastline to follow warmer water temperatures. You have less crowds in the fall with excellent fishing opportunities for so many species of fish. Inshore, nearshore or offshore, there will be plenty of fish biting.

The cooler winter months can provide tougher fishing when the cold fronts move in, however, this area stays fairly warm through the winter. With the cooler water temperatures of the winter, a lot of fish species stack up inside the inlet as the inshore waters will hold warmer water. As a result, the the inshore fishing can be very good here, especially when there are several warmer days in a row. This is the time of year to target snook, redfish, sheepshead, flounder and trout. Some of the backcountry areas can hold some of the best fishing during the winter months, so don’t rule out some of the shallower backcountry areas from December through February. Offshore, fishing regulations limit what you can put in the cooler, but there will still be some boats going out and the nearshore and offshore reefs and wrecks will still hold plenty of fish willing to bite.
