Saltwater catfish are a common bycatch in the Steinhatchee area, especially when bottom fishing with natural bait. While not typically targeted due to their slimy texture and sharp spines, they’re abundant and easy to catch. Two species are present — hardhead catfish and the larger gafftopsail catfish.

In the Steinhatchee area, saltwater catfish are commonly found around:

Muddy-bottom bays and nearshore drop-offs

Tidal creeks and brackish river mouths

Fishing piers and sandy channels

They’re most often caught while soaking cut bait or shrimp on the bottom.
