There are many places that you can fish from shore in the St. Augustine, Florida area.  Take a look below to learn more about these spots.

Vilano Beach Pier

The Vilano Beach Pier is located close to downtown St. Augustine.  The pier is 700 feet long and it puts you right on top of some excellent fishing opportunities in the Tolomato River.  This is a popular pier to visit just to hang out and take in the sights.  It is also one of the most popular shore fishing spots in the area.  This pier is fairly close to the St. Augustine Inlet, so the tidal changes to a great job to bring in bait and all types of inshore fish species.

St. Johns County Ocean Pier

This pier was a popular fishing pier, however, it is currently closed to fishing while repairs are being done.

Matanzas River Inlet

If you’re looking to find a nice beach spot with good fishing opportunities and less crowds, the Matanzas River Inlet is worth a visit.  The Matanzas River Inlet is located about 25 to 30 minutes from St. Augustine.  There will still be plenty of people visiting this area on most days, however, the numbers are much smaller than in St. Augustine and St. Augustine Beach.  Anglers catch a variety of fish from shore, but the fishing is even better if you fish the river with a boat.  Redfish, sea trout and flounder are the primary species in the river, but you may find a variety of fish around the inlet such as mackerel, jacks, pompano, bluefish, sheepshead and more.

Fish the Beaches

There are miles of beaches in the St. Augustine area of Florida.  As you get closer to the center of town, you are going to find more crowds, however, the beaches are not super crowded compared to many other popular beach destinations in Florida.  Most anglers can find a place to fish from the surf, but if you do come here to visit and experience more crowds than you like, just head further south.  As you head south towards the Matanzas River Inlet, you will find uncrowded beaches and some good surf fishing for a variety of fish species.
