The black drum is the largest of the drum family. It is very powerful because of its size and broad shoulders. Black drum in the 30 pound range are common and they can exceed 100 pounds. These fish are found on the Atlantic Coast and along the Gulf Coast.
Black Drum Fishing in the Space Coast Area
Black drum move into the inshore areas of the Space Coast in large numbers every spring. The inshore waters consist of the Indian River, Mosquito Lagoon and the Banana River. Throughout the inshore waters, black drum are common and there are plenty of quality fish available. Near Port Canaveral is where anglers usually catch the bigger black drum in this area. The best fishing takes place from fall through winter in the area inshore waters.
Black Drum Fishing Tips
Spring and fall are popular times to target black drum because they head into the bays and inlets to spawn. They feed on the bottom and some of the best baits are clams and crabs.
