Saltwater catfish, including gafftopsail and hardhead varieties, are commonly caught inshore around Sarasota. Though not highly prized by most anglers, they are abundant and easy to catch, especially in areas with structure and current. Gafftopsail catfish are the larger of the two and have a more desirable appearance and texture.

In bays and passes with strong tidal flow

Near docks, bridges, and piers

Inshore flats, especially near drop-offs

Along beaches and river mouths with muddy bottoms
