The spring air temperatures help warm the St Joseph Bay’s waters and this provides some awesome fishing opportunities for anglers. Fishing in the bay is good in the spring for redfish, sea trout and flounder and sheepshead. Anglers also catch black drum. Whiting and pompano can be found roaming the beaches. Migratory species such as bluefish, cobia, pompano, jacks and sharks start showing up here in good numbers as water temperatures rise through the spring. Offshore, the fishing gets better as waters warm into late spring. Charters usually fish the reefs and wrecks for a variety of snapper, grouper, triggerfish, amberjack, sharks and more. The pelagic species such as marlin, tuna, mahi mahi and wahoo are found much further offshore.

In the summer, the bay provides some excellent inshore fishing for a variety of fish. Anglers do well in the bay with redfish, sea trout, flounder and black drum. The summer is also popular for scalloping in the bay. The Annual MBARA Kingfish Tournament is in the summer. Tarpon migrate into the area and it is common to find anglers scouting the beaches in their boats as they look for schooling tarpon. Spanish mackerel, grouper, snapper, jacks and sharks are here in good numbers too. Further offshore, there are plenty of pelagic species to target, however, it is a far boat ride out to chase these fish.

As the water temperatures cool in the fall, the fishing gets really good here for many species of fish. Inshore, the redfish and trout fishing is excellent through the fall. As waters cool in the bay, the sheepshead start moving back in larger numbers towards the end of the fall. In early fall, you can still catch a lot of the migratory species as they pass through here on their way to warmer waters.

The cooler winter months provide tougher fishing when cold fronts move in. Fishing can still be good here in the bay for redfish, trout, flounder and sheepshead. Offshore, there won’t be nearly as many boats heading out of this area, but there are some fish to be caught. St. Joseph Bay will get most of the attention from anglers that are fishing here in the winter. On some of the nicer days in the winter, the fishing can be quite good in just a few feet of water for redfish, trout, flounder and sheepshead.
