Dams and spillways are great places to a variety of fish. On many of the larger bodies of water up north with dams and spillways, you can get into some good perch fishing in some of these places. The walleye run gets a lot more attention in the spring and fall as they run up the rivers to the base of these dams and spillways. However, perch will move into these spots as well.
Spring and Fall are Best
The rivers that offer good perch fishing will see large numbers of perch moving up to the base of the dams and spillways in the spring and fall. In the summer, you can still find some nice perch below these dams and spillways, but the fish seem to spread out more throughout the river during the summer months. The spring and fall are definitely the peak times to find good numbers of perch below the dams and spillways.
Fish the Current Breaks
Some of the better areas to fish along dams are current breaks. Some current breaks may be obvious, but others come from bottom structure. A sharp drop-off or underwater hump will form a current break downstream of the dam and perch will hold in these areas
