Tarpon are the ultimate inshore game fish and are occasionally encountered in the Pensacola area, particularly during the warmer months. While not as common as in southern Florida, migratory tarpon pass through the northern Gulf and offer exciting opportunities near passes and beaches.


Where to Catch Tarpon


In the Pensacola area, tarpon may be found:

Cruising along beaches and sandbars

Near inlets and passes

In the bays near deep channels

Look for rolling fish and fish live bait slowly during calm conditions

Spring Tarpon begin arriving in late spring
Summer Best season with good beach and pass action
Fall Some fish remain until early fall

Tackle & Tips


Lures: Large swimbaits, DOA Baitbusters, and Hogy lures

Bait: Live mullet, crabs, or threadfin herring

Leaders: 60–100 lb fluorocarbon

Technique: Sight fish with live bait, free-lined under calm conditions or drift near inlets
