Black drum are bottom-feeding fish that grow very large and put up a powerful fight. In the Pensacola area, they are common around bridges, in the bays, and in nearshore waters. While smaller “puppy drum” are good table fare, the larger fish are usually released after a fun battle.


Where to Catch Black Drum


In the Pensacola area, black drum are commonly found:

Around bridge pilings and deep dock systems

Along oyster bars, seawalls, and jetties

Occasionally in the surf zone or passes

Fishing with bait on the bottom is the most effective technique.
