Triggerfish are found in the same type of habitat as red snapper. They feed on crabs, shrimp, sand dollars, sea urchins and mollusks. Anglers usually catch them on squid or cut bait, but triggerfish are also a popular fish for spearfishing. These fish usually exceed depths of 80 feet or more.
Triggerfish Fishing in the Orange Beach / Gulf Shores, AL Area
This area is home to some very good bottom fishing, however, the 100 fathom line is around 36 miles out from shore. There are nearshore and offshore wrecks closer than that, so you can find plenty of triggerfish closer to shore, but the better bottom fishing spots are out in the 600 foot depths and deeper. Anglers catch plenty of triggerfish here while targeting grouper and snapper on the nearshore and offshore reefs and wrecks.
Triggerfish Fishing Tips
Triggerfish are notorious bait stealers and often frustrate anglers that are fishing for snapper and grouper. Triggerfish have a hard, bony mouth, so you need to make sure you’re using a small, but very strong, sharp hook.
