Snapper are a favorite target for inshore and nearshore anglers fishing around Dunedin, Palm Harbor, and Tarpon Springs. Mangrove snapper are the most common inshore, while red snapper and other deeper species are found offshore on reefs and ledges.


Where to Catch Snapper


Snapper are often caught around:

Mangrove shorelines and oyster bars

Docks, seawalls, and bridges

Nearshore and offshore reefs and wrecks

Chumming around ledges and hard bottom

Summer Peak fishing inshore and offshore for all snapper species
Fall Still active; fish begin transitioning to deeper areas

Tackle & Tips


Lures: Small jigs, twitchbaits, or soft plastics

Bait: Live shrimp, pilchards, or cut bait near structure

Leaders: 20–30 lb fluorocarbon

Technique: Use light tackle and fish close to structure; be prepared for quick, hard strikes
