Sheepshead are structure-loving inshore fish known for their striped appearance and excellent table fare. Found around pilings, docks, bridges, and rocky areas throughout Dunedin, Palm Harbor, and Tarpon Springs, these fish are notorious bait stealers and require finesse to catch.


Where to Catch Sheepshead


Look for sheepshead around:

Bridges, piers, and dock pilings with barnacles

Jetties, seawalls, and rocky structure

Nearshore artificial reefs

Residential canals with crustacean-rich environments

Tackle & Tips


Lures: Very few; small jigs tipped with bait may work

Bait: Fiddler crabs, shrimp, oysters, barnacles

Leaders: 20–25 lb fluorocarbon

Technique: Use light tackle with sensitive rods to detect subtle bites; fish close to structure
