Sharks are abundant in the coastal and nearshore waters around Dunedin, Palm Harbor, and Tarpon Springs. Common species include blacktip, bonnethead, nurse, and occasionally bull sharks. They offer thrilling battles and are often targeted by anglers looking for big fish close to shore.


Where to Catch Sharks


Sharks can be caught around:

Beaches and surf zones, especially in summer

Nearshore reefs, ledges, and passes

Around bait schools and chum slicks

Bridges and backwater areas for smaller species

Tackle & Tips


Lures: Rarely used; most sharks are caught on bait

Bait: Fresh-cut mullet, ladyfish, jack crevalle, or bonita

Leaders: Heavy mono or steel leader (80–200 lb test)

Technique: Anchor and chum, or drift bait over structure; use circle hooks for safe release
