Saltwater catfish, primarily hardhead and gafftopsail catfish, are common inshore bottom feeders in the Dunedin, Palm Harbor, and Tarpon Springs area. While not a prized target, they are frequently caught by anglers fishing shrimp or cut bait for other species.


Where to Catch Saltwater Catfish


Saltwater catfish are commonly caught in:

Sandy or muddy bottom areas in bays and estuaries

Around bridges, docks, and seawalls

Tidal creeks and backwater channels

While bottom fishing for redfish, drum, or trout

Lures: Rarely caught on lures; mostly bait

Bait: Shrimp, squid, or cut bait on bottom rigs

Leaders: 15–20 lb mono or fluorocarbon
