Spanish mackerel are fast, toothy predators often found nearshore and just outside the passes in the Dunedin, Palm Harbor, and Tarpon Springs area. These fish are a favorite for light-tackle anglers and can be caught from boats, piers, or the beach during seasonal runs.


Where to Catch Mackerel


In this region, Spanish mackerel are commonly found near:

Bait pods nearshore and along the beaches

Artificial reefs and nearshore hard bottom

Passes, bridges, and piers

Bird activity indicating baitfish on top

Lures: Spoons, Got-Cha plugs, flashy jigs

Bait: Live threadfin, sardines, or cut bait

Leaders: 30–40 lb mono or light wire

Technique: Fast retrieves and trolling work best around bait schools
