Spotted sea trout are one of the most popular inshore gamefish in the Dunedin, Palm Harbor, and Tarpon Springs area. These aggressive feeders are abundant on grass flats, drop-offs, and sandy potholes, especially during cooler months.


Where to Catch Sea Trout


Sea trout are often found inshore near:

Seagrass flats with sandy potholes

Edges of channels and drop-offs

Creek mouths and muddy basins

Dock lights and shadow lines at night

Season Sea Trout Activity
Winter Excellent action in deeper holes and muddy bottom bays
Spring Spawning begins; fish feed aggressively on flats
Fall Great numbers and quality fish return to inshore zones

Peak Season: November through April


Tackle & Tips


Lures: Soft plastics on jig heads, suspending twitch baits

Bait: Live shrimp, pilchards, pinfish

Leaders: 20–25 lb fluorocarbon

Technique: Drift grass flats or anchor near potholes during tidal movement
