The spring and early summer are great times to fish the Nestor Falls area on Lake of the Woods. This area has a lot of shallow water in it compared to other parts of the lake and the areas that warm up first will usually hold a lot of fish. Smallmouth bass, pike, walleye, muskie and panfish can all be found throughout this year and they will be hungry. Fish the bays as well as the nearby points and reefs that are close to the bays. You will find fish shallow and deep this time of year, but as the waters warm into the first couple weeks of June, you should be able to find some awesome fishing in the shallows.

In the summer, fish will move to deeper water. Some of the islands and points with quick drop-offs can be awesome spots to catch a variety of fish. You will still find some fish relating to the shallow water stuff here, however, the better bite will usually be a little deeper. The 12 to 20 foot depths will hold a lot of fish such as smallmouth bass, pike, walleye and muskie. At some point, you will see more walleye and pike in that 20 to 30 foot range, however, this area has a lot of shallow water to fish with some deep water. You won’t be overwhelmed trying to find fish in deeper water here because you aren’t going to see the quick drop-offs into 50, 60, 80 or even 100 feet of water like you will see in other areas. You can take a boat ride north or west to find that deeper water, but there are a lot of good spots that hold fish in that 12 to 20 foot range in this area.
