Redfish
Redfish are found primarily inshore. They can be found near bridges, piers, jetties, near docks, in the surf, in bays and in tidal creeks. Redfish will be found inshore year-round, which is one of the reasons why they are so popular among anglers.
Redfish Fishing in the Mexico Beach, Florida Area
Mexico Beach is a nearshore / offshore fishing destination. If you want to target redfish inshore, you can fish St. Joseph Bay, which is just down the road from Mexico Beach. Some anglers do target redfish around the nearshore bottom structures off of Mexico Beach. The Mexico Beach area has so many good fishing spots nearshore and offshore due to the Mexico Beach Artificial Reef Association (MBARA). They do an amazing job at bringing more fish into this area, so anglers do not have to venture way off shore to find quality fish to catch. While redfish will not be the primary species of fish for most anglers out here, some anglers do target them and some very big fish can be caught. If you want to target redfish inshore, St. Joseph Bay is just down the road in Port St. Joe, Florida and it offers excellent flats fishing for redfish.
Redfish Fishing Tips
Anglers target redfish with a variety of artificial lures, live baits and natural baits. While you have so many options for targeting redfish, most anglers will keep it simple and use live shrimp, dead shrimp or lures that mimic a shrimp. You can target the smaller reds with medium heavy rods and reels, but if you are going after bigger redfish, you’re going to want to go with medium heavy to heavy action gear to help land some of these huge fish.
