Grouper are one of the most popular offshore species targeted out of Mexico Beach. Red grouper and gag grouper are the most commonly caught, with other species like scamp found in deeper waters. These powerful bottom fish are found around natural reefs, ledges, and wrecks, and are best caught using heavy gear and live bait.


Where to Catch Grouper


In the Mexico Beach area, grouper are caught:

Around offshore reefs and ledges 10–40 miles out

Near artificial reef structures and wrecks

Over natural hard bottom areas and limestone breaks

Drop baits directly to the bottom and be ready for a hard initial pull.
