Marco Island has a tremendous inshore fishery and the warm weather in the spring bring some tremendous fishing opportunities. The warm fronts bring great fishing for snook, redfish, tarpon and trout, but these are just some of the fish to target in the never ending maze of islands that is connected by creeks, rivers, bays and inlets. Some of the other popular fish to target are Goliath grouper, sharks, pompano, jacks, tripletail and permit.

In the summer, it is hot down here, but so is the fishing. The inshore waters still provide good fishing during the tidal changes. The mornings and evenings that coincide with tidal changes are great times to fish. The shade around docks and mangroves are great spots to fish as well. Offshore, fishing is great in the summer for many species of fish such as grouper, snapper, kingfish, cobia, sharks, permit and of course the monster Goliath grouper.

As the water temperatures cool in the fall, the fishing is still very good. It does cool off in the fall, but the water temperatures are still very warm, so you won’t have to deal with too many cold fronts that shut down the fishing. The summer tourist season is over, so the crowds are gone, which means you will have so much more water to yourself to fish for redfish, snook, trout, tarpon and more.

In the winter, the weather is very mild down here. That doesn’t mean that a cold front won’t mess up your fishing trip because it does happen occasionally. For the most part though, this is one of the better winter fishing destinations in the state of Florida. There are so many areas to fish in the backcountry waters that you can usually find some active fish. The warm afternoons can help warm up some of these backwater spots by a few degrees. Add a tidal change in the evening after a warm winter day and the fishing can be excellent. Offshore, you won’t find as many boats going out due to the regulations, but if you just want to catch some fish, there is excellent fishing available off the reefs and wrecks. You may have to work a little harder to find fish species that you want to eat, but if you are looking for action, the charters can put you on some excellent fishing.
