Marathon, Florida is home to some incredible fishing. While many anglers come here to experience the offshore fishing in this area, you can find some very good fishing close to shore as well.
Backcountry Fishing
The backcountry is the water that runs along the Florida Keys island chain. If you are staying around land along the Florida Keys, you are fishing backcountry waters. These waters provide good fishing for a variety of species on flats, near the mangroves, in canals, around channels and cuts.
Around Marathon, Florida, you don’t have as much land or islands here to fish, but there is enough here to keep most anglers busy while fishing closer to your boat ramp. If you head to nearby Big Pine Key, you have a lot more islands and keys to fish. For many people, it is definitely worth a little drive to fish some of these backcountry waters in the Big Pike Key area. A variety of fish are caught in the backcountry waters such as barracuda, snapper, snook, sheepshead, redfish, permit and more.
Bridge Fishing
Marathon, Florida is home to the famous 7 mile bridge. Anglers do very well by fishing from a boat and from shore around this bridge. There are so many species of fish that move in and out of this area during tidal changes. Anglers catch tarpon, sharks, jacks, snapper, grouper and more. There are other bridges in this area as well, so if you want to do some bridge fishing, you have a lot of options in this part of the Florida Keys.
Flats Fishing
There are some awesome flats fishing opportunities in the area as well. Anglers usually target permit, barracuda and bonefish on the flats, but you can find a variety of other species here too.
