Fishing Lake Vermilion in the Spring

Month Avg. Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
March 36° / 11°
April 50° / 26°
May 64° / 39°

There are a lot of bays here and in the spring, lots of fish will move into these areas as water temperatures warm up.  The newer green weeds with some warmer water will attract a variety of fish.  This is a big lake and the wind can move the warmer water around quite a bit, so make sure to find the warmer water because you will usually find a lot more active fish.

Fishing Lake Vermilion in the Summer

Month Avg. Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
June 73° / 50°
July 79° / 55°
August 76° / 53°

In the summer, the fishing can be a lot tougher here on many anglers because the lake is so big and the fish have a lot of room to spread out.  Learn to fish the deeper weed edges and offshore structure to find some of the bigger schools of fish.  The quality fish will usually be out deeper on the main lake as well.  You can still find plenty of fish shallower, in the bays and along the mainland shorelines, however, good numbers of fish move offshore and if you learn how to find them, you should have more success in the summer.

Fishing Lake Vermilion in the Fall

Month Avg. Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
September 68° / 45°
October 53° / 33°
November 36° / 19°

The fall is transition time and there is a lot of water here for fish to spread out.  Some fish move shallow, while some stay deep.  You may want to bounce around until you find a pattern.  It may be different on any given day in the fall.  For the shallow water anglers, you can fish a lot of that 4 to 10 foot water again and catch fish like in the spring.  Just don’t expect as many fish as the spring.  If you want to stay deep, that can pay off also.  As water temperatures cool down and the fall comes to an end, the better bite will almost always be deeper for just about every species of fish in the lake.

Fishing Lake Vermilion in the Winter (Ice Fishing)

Month Avg. Temps °F (Hi/Lo)
December 22° / 3°
January 17° / -7°
February 23° / -4°

Lake Vermilion is a popular ice fishing destination.  There are plenty of resorts still open and doing business, so you will see other anglers out here fishing in their shacks.  This lake has a lot of panfish and good numbers of walleye, so you have plenty of fish that feed through the winter to keep you busy.  The pike fishing can be good in the winter also if you can find them.
